There are a few myths that even the most veteran indoor tanners tend to believe and here at Extreme Tan and Smoothies we like to help to set people straight. One of the biggest tanning myths is that if you utilize indoor tanning beds then you have enough of a base tan that you don’t need to use sunblock. This simply isn’t true.

Why You Have to Use Sunblock Even if you Tan Indoors

Unfortunately for many indoor tanners there is a misconception that if you obtain a “base tan” you do not need to use sunblock when spending time outside in the sun. Most often when people believe this misconception they are quickly proven wrong when they experience their first sunburn. While indoor tanners may already have darker skin all this means is that the UV rays from tanning have influenced melanin production . It is the job of melanin to absorb UV rays to protect bodily cells from becoming damaged from sun exposure. Increased bronzing of the skin as can be seen in those who tan often does nothing to protect the skin from further damage by UV rays. The application of sunblock is mandatory for all individuals who are going to be spending any amount of time out in the sun in order to prevent the cells within skin from becoming damaged by overexposure to the sun.

Final Sunblock Thoughts

There are many varieties of sunblock that are available over the counter at a number of locations but it is important to purchase a sunblock that is powerful enough to protect the skin from sun damage.
