Tanning during your pregnancy – Is it okay?

This is a very common question when it comes to indoor tanning and can be a very controversial topic amongst many. There are have been no studies or scientific proof on the effects of tanning while you’re pregnant, so do not always believe what you hear. Your doctor may advise you not to, which is all up to you. Also, the UV based lighting used in indoor tanning beds will not reach the child either.

Although you may choose to tan, during your first trimester, your doctor will usually advise you not to perform any activity to increase your body temperature which includes tanning, hot tubs, saunas and more. If your doctor allows you to tan, you should begin with short sessions ranging from 10-15 minutes and slowly work your way up but the most important thing you can do is exercise common sense. Please use caution during your last trimester as well as the high heat could be harmful to the baby or you.

Some salons have strict rules regarding tanning while you’re pregnant for reasons of liability, so be sure to check first as they may require a note from your Physician.

If you have any questions, please consult your Doctor or Physician to get a professional recommendation as he/she knows your medical history and condition.
