Even if you’re not ready for it, unfortunately the Tan Tax goes into effect tomorrow. What does it mean to us? The tanning tax applies to all electronic products designed for tanning that use one or more ultraviolet lamps with wavelengths between 200 and 400 nanometers. The good news is that other sunless tanning options such as spray tans and tanning lotions are not included in the tax.

There’s no way around this, it sucks. To make matters worse, the tanning industry is the only group that was singled out for the tax. Some fear that it’ll cause salons to close. You don’t have to worry about Extreme Tan And Smoothies closing up shop anytime soon, but some industry experts like Joseph Levy, vice president of the International Smart Tan Network, estimate that 9,000 jobs are in danager and more than 1,000 salons are at risk of being forced to close their doors.
It’s also pretty obvious that the tax also targets middle-class and female business owners because approximately two-thirds of tanning salons in the U.S. owned by women, he said.
The 10% tanning tax replaced a 5% tax on cosmetic surgery that was originally included in the health care reform bill.
That tax, nicknamed the “Botax,” would have included everything from Botox injections to breast implants and other elective surgeries. However, it was cut out of the bill after heavy lobbying from the medical and dermatology industries.
Because Botax was expected to generate $5.8 billion, double what the tan tax is expected to raise, many tanning salon owners and tanners are upset about the last minute switch because the tanning tax directly targets middle class women businesses. The Botax would’ve mainly impacted richer people who would have been more able to handle higher prices.
What do you think about the tan tax? Do you think it’s fair?

Used properly and safely, tanning beds can be safer than tanning outdoors at the beach or by the pool. A tanning bed regulates how much time you spend under UV rays and Extreme Tan And Smoothies has trained employees to check your skin type and will create a safe regime to help you tan. Plus our tanning beds and saloon employees follow guidelines provided by the US Food and Drug Administration, as well as other government agencies.

If you enjoy a golden tan, you can tan safely without fear of sunburns or cancer if you take certain precautions. First you need to know your skin type. It’s important to know because it will determine how long you should stay in the tanning bed. People with a skin type of I or II shouldn’t tan for very long.
The following is a list of the different skin types as described by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Skin Type I – Burns Usually, Hardly Tans
Skin Type II – Burns Easily, Light Tan
Skin Type III – Burns Moderately, Tans Progressively
Skin Type IV – Burns Minimally, Tans Dark
Skin Type V – Hardly Burns, Very Dark Tan
Skin Type VI – Burns Under Extreme Exposure, Naturally Very Dark
Indoor tanning is safe only when you tan for a short amounts of time and tanning should be regulated. Generally, we suggest starting at just 7 minutes and working your way up to the full time in a tanning bed to prevent getting burnt.
Another general tanning tip is to not tan repeatedly in less than 24 hours if possible. Your tan hasn’t fully developed and you will still be ‘tanning’ even without the sun. You may risk overexposure if you go in more often. Do not return to the tanning salon every day. Ask your Extreme Tan And Smoothies tanning salon professional for a preferred tanning schedule.
People who tan are often concerned about safety in regards to sunburns, skin cancer and much more. Overall, tanning can be safe if done properly. One of the best ways to tan safely is to regulate your tan with a tanning bed. When used properly, a tanning bed is limited exposure to ultraviolet rays, the same rays that the sun produces. With a tanning bed, you can time your exposure precisely and you will end up with a nice, glowing tan that was safe to get.
